Assistant Project Manager

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNTIONS (Assistant Project Manager):

  • Leadership

Expected to provide leadership in this role on relatively small projects (this role is expected to be on an as needed, non-full-time basis).

Provides leadership for the Project Team (may be multi-discipline engineering and design team) which is described as timely decision-making, inspirational presence, personal and team level accountability and responsibility, integrity, effective maintenance of open and forthright communications with others, and transparency of motivation and action.

Works with the company President/VP of Engineering and Project Managers (as needed) to establish clear goals and direction vision for projects and project team members. Has demonstrated and continues to progress in demonstrating self-confident, competent, assertive, and decisive behavioral traits.

Begins to understand the importance of resolving team conflicts in a straightforward, positive and professional manner and demonstrates an increasing level of competence in doing so.

Role models collaborative leadership by building strong and productive relationships with project managers to ensure the overall success of the organization.

  • Project Management

Possesses and demonstrates a basic competence in the general principles of project management, including project scoping/initiation, project budget development. project planning and scheduling, project controls, project execution, and project close-out.

Able to develop simplified, clear work plans covering multi-discipline scopes of work

for relatively small sized engineering projects for review by the Director of Project Management. Implements and reviews work plans with project team, ensuring the Team has a clear scope and plan. Manages project scope change, tracks and updates project progress, controls project progress and executes project requirements adjusting as necessary throughout project’s duration to achieve schedule and budgetary goals.

Manage project schedules using a deliverables-based approach.

Works with and collaborates with lead discipline engineers to request resources and resolve schedule constraints.

Expected to be able to manage smaller projects independently with required support and interaction from senior leadership to help ensure success.

May be assigned to a large project to assist the project manager with the responsibility associated with the larger project and for a learning experience.

Works with and learns from senior leadership to become more proficient in the Project Management role.

Aspires to become a Project Manager as this role is intended for individuals that desire to pursue that professional development track/role.

  • Technical Leadership

Exhibits a basic understanding of multi-discipline technical knowledge along with the willingness to engage with the engineers and designers working on projects to steer projects technically and ensure timely technical decision-making.

Able to weigh the pros and cons of various technical decision points in a multi-discipline environment and implement decisions based on same. Solicits input and guidance from LDE’s, discipline department managers and/or Project Managers to mature their multi-discipline knowledge and to better understand the technical implications of their decision making.

Ensures efficient coordination of all engineering disciplines on a project. Able to inform the client regarding key technical elements of projects, and implications of client goals and thought processes on overall project cost, schedule, and complexity.

Can be expected to perform in a technical role (in addition to a management role) on the same project that they are managing.

  • Client Management

Effectively manages client’s expectations through the communication of project procedures manual, control and communication of change management, and effective use of project communication channels. Is primary corporate liaison with our customer, responsible for ensuring client satisfaction while achieving corporate objectives.

  • Software Utilization

Familiar with the proper use of project management software tools. Exhibits proficiency in the use of general office software packages.

Possesses a basic understanding of the limitations and capabilities of the software packages utilized by engineers and designers within the Project Team.

  • Standards and Procedures

Is responsible for learning and understanding project management standards as well as ensuring that corporate standards and procedures are implemented in the execution of projects.

SKILLS / EXPERIENCE / TRAINING REQUIRED:

  • Education, BS in related Engineering field
  • Must have demonstrated satisfactory performance in the roll of Staff Level II engineer for at least 5 years (not required but ideal) or higher levels of technical role responsibility (or equivalent)
  • Must have demonstrated strong interpersonal skills and technical competency in a multi-discipline project environment

WORKING CONDITIONS / PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Occasional climbing, bending, standing and lifting
  • Occasional work in noisy or unpleasant areas different from typical office
  • Occasional travel and work off-site
